John 10:14–15 (NKJV) “I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.”
Jesus identifies Himself as “the good shepherd,” a role that emphasizes care, leadership, and responsibility. Unlike hired hands who flee when danger comes, the Good Shepherd remains with His sheep and protects them—even at the cost of His own life. This image reminds us that our Lord is neither distant nor indifferent, but personally invested in those who belong to Him.
The Lord says, “I know My sheep.” This knowledge is not casual or surface-level. Christ knows those who are His because they have heard His voice and responded in faith and obedience (John 10:27). Scripture consistently teaches that belonging to Christ is shown by following Him (Matthew 7:21; Hebrews 5:9). Being known by the Shepherd implies a relationship marked by trust, submission, and continued faithfulness.
Jesus also says His sheep know Him. True disciples do not merely acknowledge Christ—they listen to Him. Through the revealed Word, we learn His will, recognize His voice, and walk in the path He sets before us (Psalm 119:105). The church must always remain attentive to the Shepherd’s instruction, guarding against voices that would lead away from the truth.
At the heart of this passage is the gospel itself: “I lay down My life for the sheep.” Jesus willingly offered Himself as the sacrifice for sin, fulfilling God’s plan of redemption (Isaiah 53:5; 1 Peter 2:24). His death makes possible forgiveness and reconciliation with God for all who obey the gospel (Romans 6:3–4; Acts 2:38).
May we remember that as the Lord’s sheep, we are called to hear, follow, and remain faithful to the Good Shepherd, trusting in the life He gave so that we might live.
Call to Action: Let us examine whether we are truly hearing and following the Shepherd by faithfully obeying His Word and walking daily in submission to His will.
